The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on 5th Ave opposite Central Park on the upper east side is an architectural icon of the 20th century. My first memories of NYC are of this museum, the building is so distinct, it's hard to forget. The museum opened in 1959 and was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, an american architect and interior designer. It took 15 years, 700 sketches and 6 sets of working drawings to create the museum. From the street the museum looks like a white ribbon curled into a cylindrical stack. The doors didn't open until 10 years after the death of Mr. Guggenheim and 6 months after the death of Mr. Wright. The Guggenheim Foundation has museums in Venice, Bilbao, Berlin and Abu Dhabi. The Great Upheaval: Modern Art from the Guggenheim Collection, 1910-1918 was exhibiting when Mum and I visited. Exploring Cubism in Europe, featuring Pablo Picasso and Vasily Kandinsky.
